When introverted doctor Ben Hardy's high maintenance girlfriend wants to introduce a little more kink into their love life, he doesn't expect it to come in the form of the hunky new EMT who just moved to Blackwood. Ben's not gay, but DAMN! He can definitely see why all the women turn to mush when he's around. Tall, blue eyes, body of an underwear model... The prospect of being naked in the same room with him is horrifying. So why the hell is he considering it?
Corey Butler desperately needs to leave his shady past behind, and the microscopic town of Blackwood is just the place to do it. No drama, no danger, no sleeping under bridges... What he doesn't need is a huge crush on someone who's completely out of his league. When Dr. Hardy's gorgeous girlfriend propositions him for a threesome, he knows the smart thing would be to say no. Of course it would. But then Corey's never been known for making smart decisions.

Like others who reviewed this book I understand and somewhat agree with the problems others have voiced with the character of Ben. I too kept wondering why he was being so purposely irritating and mean toward Corey. But I had to let it sit and do some percolating and set it aside from time to time to let what he (Ben) was doing unfold. I think much of his motivation came from being pulled violently in two directions at the same time. From wanting to preserve the comfort and familiarity of his present and being drawn so undeniably towards the excitement and unexpected attraction to the charismatic and somewhat dangerous Corey. Being caught in such a place can be thrilling, exciting, unnerving and carry the potential to upset Ben’s entire world. I don’t say this in an attempt to excuse what most find unsettling about Ben but in hopes of understanding that Maris Black has written a very flawed, most certainly human, but redeemable person worthy of Corey’s love. This one really grew on me once I decided to look past Ben’s expected problems coming to terms with his awakening sexuality and see the man Maris wanted us to accept as worthy of Corey’s love and our acceptance.Product details

My Review
Overall.... 3.75
Performance... 3.75
Story.... 3.5
This is a hard book to rate. Overall, I did enjoy it, but there were a few wtf moments.
(First of all, you need to note that I "read" this book in audiobook and I'm not sure if all my reactions would have been the same if I had read the book, because the narrator definitely influences the characters voice.)
So...Corey...there were times when I loved him, his laissez faire attitude and his charming ways, but there were other times when he simply came across as skeevy and I had to wonder if this guy is a pure con artist. That's where I'm just not sure about the narration...because overall, Corey is a charming guy and the narrator used that voice for him, but that could have influenced the creepy feelings I got from him at times.
Ben is the opposite. He's cold, withdrawn, and doesn't make interpersonal connections...until he meets Corey. Their chemistry is instantaneous and that helps to bring Ben out of his shell. And surprise...wow, he isn't straight after all. There are ways to make gay-for-you work. I'm not quite sure this book hit that mark perfectly. Just know, you'll have to go into this one willing to suspend a bit of disbelief...or maybe a lot...things got a bit weird and crazy toward the end with the side story lines. While I liked the added drama, it just seemed to be a bit too much and over the top for the black moment.
I did not like the guys, especially Corey, using the women simply to make a point. Ugh...not hero material there, and that just motivated more of those skeevy, con-artist feelings about him.
But when the two guys were together on their own, I liked them. I liked the fact that they seem to really mesh, whether as friends or eventually more. That attraction between them worked for me...because they do compliment one another really well.
The narrator was pretty good. He did a better job on the first half than the second half in keeping Ben and Corey's inflections and voices completely different. But I will say I thought he was brilliant for the first two thirds of the book and then the voices got a bit murky.
So a bit of a mixed bag review, but overall, I did enjoy the book...and I'm glad I listened to it on audio.
Good for the most part. The actual writing is very high quality and manages to bring out the best in the story, scenes, and characters; It really is at the very LEAST four-star writing, and personally I'd say much closer to five-star, particularly considering how well handled the relationships are - The writing is seriously amazing when it comes to the characterisations. The interplay between the two main characters is just brilliant - it can be incredibly subtle and multi-nuanced as well as bold and vibrant, and their diverging perspectives and interpretations of reality give an incredible depth to their characterisations and narrative. The plot, however, not so much. The plot isn't bad per se, but it most definitely could be better, and not even the writing really saves it. Also, there are bits and pieces where the author tries to make things too nice and cute, which is really jarring considering how grounded and convincingly realistic most of the book is - basically it feels like the author comes across something a little too dark for her tastes and decides to take a short break from reality. There are some minor technical flaws with the writing itself, but the biggest issues with this book really are story and plot related (continues down below).
The following critique has some spoilers in it, so I'll give the rating here. Despite the amazing writing, this book's flaws relegate it to 3.5 stars. It really is a waste of potential, and I can't help the feeling that a good editor could have saved it.
In a follow on of some of the flaws mentioned above, the author really does miss out on some great potential avenues for the story which are just never explored or get ignored (notably some of these ideas would have made a much better plot than the one we got). Some examples? The idea that our dear doctor has depression or even bipolar disorder is just ignored in the end with "he's happy now with Corey so he get's better." Riiiiiiight. Because that's how that works. His trouble dealing with traumatic memories? Also solved by magical story powers. Corey's trends to manipulate others and his anger issues are similarly ignored with a happy ending.
There are also some "suddenly nice" resolution ideas that really should have been left out. The biggest example of this is one of the most glaring issues in the book Corey never having bottomed before at the end. Uh... Why? The reason given doesn't make sense when it's not only in regards to prostituting himself but normal sex as well, and the entire scene is honestly a little ridiculous. Particularly considering Corey's extensive and creative sexual history and his history with drugs. Corey managing to never have to sell himself that way is one thing (unlikely considering the kind of situation he was in and how he was selling himself, but understandable), but just never doing so at all when he's a healthy sexually active man with very few sexual hang-ups or problems is just... If it was written differently, it might have worked, but how it was written took this very odd and borderline unbelievable idea and made it completely break willing suspension of disbelief. It's the kind of cutsy idea and portrayal a teenage girl would like but any adult man or woman goes "hunh??!!".
